Senator Ransom "Ranse" Stoddard returns to the town of Shinbone to attend the funeral of Tom Doniphon. There, he tells a journalist the true story behind his reputation as "the man who shot Liberty Valance." Years earlier, as a young lawyer, Ranse arrived in Shinbone and was assaulted by the outlaw Liberty Valance. Determined to bring justice to the town, he confronted Valance, but discovers that the truth behind that confrontation is more complex than it seems.
