The island of Lampedusa is the southernmost point of Italy, which since 1990 has become a massive landing place for illegal immigrants from African lands. In just over 20 years, more than 20,000 people have been drowning during the crossing to reach what is for many a way to Europe, and which should enable them to escape from war and hunger. Samuel lives on the island, is 12 years old, goes to school, likes to sling and go hunting. He likes land games, even though everything around him speaks of the sea and the men, women and children who try to cross it to get there.
